Gotham Knights creative director explains why Batman isn’t the focus

Creative Director of Gotham Knights Explaining why developer WB Games Montreal chose to kick Batman in their upcoming video game. Since it was first revealed in 2020, it has been one of the main selling points of Gotham Knights is that it will tell a story set within Gotham City that will focus on Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl and Red Hood rather than the Batman story. And while this choice was a bit divisive with some fans, now we’ve learned why this direction was chosen.

In an interview with ComicBook.com on a recent studio visit to WB Games Montreal, Creative Director Patrick Redding spoke more about why. Gotham Knights He chose to tell a story that was not about Batman. While acknowledging that this storytelling decision was a daunting one, Redding made it clear that the studio had always had the full support of DC when it came to its vision for Gotham Knights.

“I think the good thing is that the very early conversations about the game in talking internally, but also with Warner Bros. and with DC, we really established early on some of the goals for that,” said Reading. “We wanted to focus on player character growth. And in the superhero space, where a lot of these iconic heroes are fully formed, they’re full power, they bring a whole bunch of tools to that fight. What we’re starting to notice is that in Gotham City, you have these heroes next door to Batman. And who really offer a lot of potential to that.”

“The more we look at it, and look at it honestly, the more we realize that Batman has become an obstacle to that because his presence robs you of your desire to be invested in these heroes,” Reading continued. “He’s like, ‘Okay, it’s great that I can grow this hero, but Batman will come and save the situation and solve the problem. So we quickly knew he needed to be removed from the picture, and we couldn’t put him on the bench temporarily. In our version of Gotham, he had to go. And once we started having that conversation, both with our publisher and with DC, they were supportive of that. truly “.

While this check for Gotham Knights It was certainly a daring project, game producer Fleur Marty continued adding that it made the project more “exciting and full of opportunity” over time. Although it might be a difficult decision at first, the end result seems to be one that many of the developers working on the game were happy with.

It remains to be seen if the decision to focus on other characters from the Batman family will pay off Gotham KnightsBut we won’t have to wait any longer to find out. The game is gearing up to launch next week on October 21 and will arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
